Gen X Emerges as an Overlooked but Powerful Force Online
Marketers are urging brands to take notice of Gen X, whose members are peaking in careers and consumer clout.
Generation X — adults currently between the ages of 46 and 61 — is drawing fresh attention from marketers and analysts who argue the cohort has been systematically underestimated as a digital and consumer force. A TikTok post by marketing commentator Joel Marlinarson recently urged brands and creators to stop overlooking the generation, framing Gen X as a rising power in online influence.
The case for that argument rests largely on economics. The World Economic Forum reported last year that if Gen X were its own country, it would rank as the world's second-largest consumer market. Gen X women alone are estimated to influence between 70% and 80% of all consumer spending, a figure that underscores the generation's outsized purchasing authority relative to its public profile.

Several converging factors are driving the shift. Many Gen Xers are reaching the apex of their professional careers, giving them higher disposable incomes at the same time that their children are aging out of intensive parenting years. Combined with higher homeownership rates compared with Millennials and Gen Z, the generation is broadly positioned to direct significant discretionary spending toward goods, experiences, and brands.
The picture is not uniformly rosy. A separate report published last month highlighted serious employment challenges facing jobseekers over 50, a demographic that overlaps substantially with Gen X. For those outside stable employment, the narrative of peak earning power and leisure time does not apply equally, adding nuance to sweeping generational claims.
